Lambert’s perspective

  • by

Well, I went from a backyard in the Burbs to this van. Somedays I am very unsure what we are doing. It can be confusing. There’s a lot of driving, and stopping. Lots of walks and unfamiliar dog parks. Sometimes we stay in a place where I get to sleep all alone, in my own bed and at times it’s my own room. No one else is there for a while. There have been other days when I am in an actual house. Sometimes there are other dogs there, sometimes none, and twice there have been cats. Cats don’t seem to like me, but I do want to play with them. They keep hitting me on the nose though, that’s weird!

Travel

I guess I have been to a lot of states. Or so I am told, excitedly, each time my ‘driver’ sees another sign. “WooHoo Lambert, we’re in Mississippi now”, etc. etc. Here’s a list and a map, in case you’re more interested than I am!

  • Oregon
  • California
  • Nevada
  • Utah
  • Arizona
  • Colorado
  • New Mexico
  • Texas
  • Louisiana
  • Mississippi
  • Alabama
  • Georgia
  • South Carolina
  • North Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Kentucky
  • Ohio
  • West Virginia
  • Virginia
  • Maryland
  • Pennsylvania
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • Massachusetts

Here’s a visual aid. Hope it helps. It’s been 91 days (of my captivity) and over 10,000 miles. OMG, when will I have my own backyard again?

Daily Life

I generally get what I want. We walk and walk and walk and I decide NOT to go ‘potty’ (as she calls it) so we have to walk and walk and walk again. I am VERY particular about my food and it can change day to day. I also don’t eat in the morning, just to keep things interesting! That means we have to stop many times to walk again and then see if I will eat…this time!

Though with all of this planning on my part I am not getting enough sleep! I know I should sleep 12-14 hours a day, but, MY GOD, I cannot sleep while she’s driving! That would be crazy.

When we started I was buckled into something that barely allowed me to move on the big chair and I hated looking outside OR I was in this fabric box thing behind the big seats, that sucked too. Then sometimes I was on my bed in the way back, that wasn’t great either. Now I am buckled into an awful harness thing that attaches to something else so all I can do is move from the big chair to my bed and back and forth. (This is the best so option so far and I am not drooling anymore when I look outside.) But sometimes I start panting, apparently too much, then we must stop again. To walk and ‘maybe’ I will eat now.

The contraption

For a while I was only eating outside this driving contraption, but now it’s too hot, so sometimes I will eat inside. I also try not to drink water, just to see what she will do! She gets so unhinged that she will try to hand feed me water! Dip her hand in so I get a small drink. Can we say CRAZY??

Mundane Things

We do wander in towns, which can be fun. Many times when we stop, it’s somewhere she can eat and often I get some chicken or beef too. Those are some good days! We also ‘hike’. Hiking is not one of my favorite things, I cannot run and chase the squirrels, I have to be polite to other dogs and people, and I just want to run! There are way too many things for me to smell and she is always telling me to ‘look around’. OMG!

In the evening we are generally inside the contraption and she is on her computer, typing and typing and typing. Sometimes we sit outside and she reads or we play toys. I do get to visit many dog parks, sometimes the same one for a day or two, but not always! When we’re at a house there is no typing, that’s a relief! The clacking keys are annoying!

I do enjoy the home stays. Our first couple of nights we didn’t sleep in the contraption! I thought, okay. I can deal with this. A little driving and then hanging on a couch (though this was the place the cat really got me). That didn’t last long! We were back on the road – and sleeping in THE VAN!

The next ‘visit’ was a long time from the first! But I got to play with Rue and Sage and they were fun. (TBH Rue was more fun, Sage had some weird high pitched bark when she played.) Though there was no couch time there. There were weird objects on the couch whenever it was just us dogs. Oh well. I still slept in a bed! And PLAYED ALL THE TIME!!!

Maddy was here for a while, but Macy wasn’t with her, I do wonder why. That was fun. We stayed in ots of places, one with no dog, but dog smells and then ofcourse, time in the ‘van’ and then a lovely place where I had my own bed many times during the day, but shared with Maddy at night. She (Maddy) did try to get me to go into water A LOT, that was annoying. I am a dog! Not a fish!

One more ‘home stay’ (what I am calling it now). Another place with a cat, no dog, but I was allowed on the couch! The cat seemed okay, hissed a bit but I left it alone. We took a lot of walks and I got to sleep on the bed when she went out.

Recently I had a few days of heaven. I laid on the couch and played video games, watched some tennis and NASCAR, it was great! I also got to run! No leash, the grass was unending! There were three dogs there (though only two could play, Roxie and Tilly, Max was too angry). Those dogs were funny and huge, but I could outrun them like nothing! Roxie was a bit crazy, she jumped in this big water thing that people (including my person) were in, and they were enjoying it. WEIRD!

We’re back to the van, alone. I am trying to sleep more and I am getting some great food now. So I am eating better. I will survive. I do wonder when this will stop! We sleep on a little couch thing together and it’s getting old! I want my own bed, or a bigger one to share.

Well that’s all I have for now! Let me know if you have a couch friendly home…
